Emon Saburō (衛 門 三郎) is considered by the legend to be the first pilgrim when he went in search of the monk Kukai (Kōbō Daishi) to beg for forgiveness.
Having refused a donation to Kukai, Emon Saburō, who was very rich and very stingy, saw all his sons die. He supposedly walked Shikoku 20 times in search of the monk. Finally he made a last turn in the opposite direction and fell very ill near the temple 12 where he met Kukai who granted him his pardon.
