We start with Tokushima prefecture where is located the temple No. 1 Ryozen-ji, the starting point of the pilgrimage.
23 of the 88 temples of the Shikoku pilgrimage are located in Tokushima prefecture or Awa (Tokushima former name). The departure is in the city of Naruto, famous for its whirlpools, born from the meeting of the Pacific Ocean with the Seto Sea (Setonaikai). This first part of the pilgrimage is about 153 kilometers long and is called the path of enlightenment.
The first 10 temples are concentrated on 27 kilometers only. When evaluating your steps, you must take into account the density of the temples. Indeed between the different rituals, the writing of the seal of the temple, it is easily near 15 minutes minimum per temple.
The city of Tokushima hosts temples 13 to 17. It is very famous for its Awa-odori dance festival during the obon (from 13 to 15 August)
