The Rinzai Buddhist School ( 臨済宗, Rinzai-shū) is one of the major currents with the Soto School of Zen Buddhism in Japan. She is a branch of Linji Chinese School ( Chinese reading of the Rinzai characters) from which it takes its name.
The Rinzai Buddhist School introduction to Japan dates back to 1191 by the monk Myōan Eisai. It is characterized by a Koan practice unlike the Soto school whose foundation is the practice of zazen meditation.
