Settai

Settai (接待) or more exactly O-settai  means “reception, welcome”. During Shikoku pilgrimage, O-settaie are the gifts, or sometimes money, that pilgrims receive on their way to 88 temples. It’s a very old custom when there was no convenience store or vending machine. So the pilgrims were extremely thankful for this custom.
It can take various forms: water bottle, food, souvenirs or why not board and lodging. Sometimes the pilgrim receives some money to buy food or drink.
