Temple history :
According to legend, En no Gyōja an ascetic vagabond (634-701) defeated a dragon on this place and founded a temple. More than 100 years later, Kōbō Daishi visits this place and learns that the dragon still threatens. He climbed the mountain singing sutra and under the protection of Kokūzō Bosatsu. Despite the flames that the dragon spewed, he managed to lock him in a cave. The name of the temple, Shōsan-ji (Burning Mountain Temple) comes from this legend.
