うどん
Udon
Thick wheat-flour noodles famous in Shikoku
Food
Udon are thick Japanese noodles made from wheat flour. They are famous across Shikoku, especially Sanuki Udon from Kagawa Prefecture.
Of Chinese origin, udon is said to have been introduced to Japan by Kūkai (空海) in the 9th century.
A widely beloved staple, udon can be enjoyed hot or chilled (especially refreshing in summer). For centuries, however, udon consumption was largely reserved for Buddhist monks (up until the 17th–18th century).
