Kyōhon

The kyōhon (経本) is a small accordion-fold booklet containing, among other texts, the Heart Sutra (Hannya shingyō) and other prayers recited during the pilgrimage. While not mandatory, pilgrims chant before the hondō and daishidō first the Heart Sutra, then the specific mantra for the temple, and finally the gohōgō.
