Okunoin

Inner sanctuary of a temple, often set apart

Templesnew, to be validated

The okunoin (奥の院) is the “innermost” sanctuary of a temple: a sacred place linked to its founding, often set apart, sometimes in the mountains. The most famous is the one at Kōya-san, where Kōbō Daishi rests. Several temples of the pilgrimage have one.
