Rakan

Disciple of the Buddha who has attained awakening (arhat)

Buddhismreviewed, to be validated

Rakan (羅漢), arhat in Sanskrit, designates an enlightened disciple of the Buddha. In Mahayana Buddhism, practiced in Japan, the arhat is revered but ranked below the bodhisattva (bosatsu), who postpones complete nirvana to help save others. Rakan are often depicted in statues in assemblies of 16, 18, or 500 (gohyaku rakan), as at temple 5, Jizō-ji.
