The Tendai school (天台宗, Tendai-shū) is a major tradition of Japanese Buddhism founded in the early 9th century by Saichō, a contemporary of Kūkai, centered on Mount Hiei near Kyoto. Like Shingon, it incorporates esoteric practices. Several temples on the Shikoku pilgrimage belong to Tendai.
