Présentation
The former province of Tosa, now Kōchi Prefecture, is the Path of ascetic training (修行の道場, shugyō no dōjō). Only sixteen temples, but more than 370 km of trail: this is the prefecture of long distances, along the Pacific Ocean, from one cape to the other.
Everything begins at Cape Muroto with Hotsumisaki-ji (24). Kōnomine-ji (27) is then earned through a short but steep climb, up to 425 m above the sea. Around the city of Kōchi, the temples draw close together again, such as Chikurin-ji (31) on Mount Godai.
Then the stages stretch out: nearly 58 km to Iwamoto-ji (37), then the longest stage of the entire pilgrimage, nearly 83 km to Cape Ashizuri and Kongōfuku-ji (38), and another 57 km to Enkō-ji (39), in Sukumo.
This is also the prefecture where buses and trains are most helpful: they significantly shorten a large part of the stages for anyone short on time or strength.
