Présentation
The former province of Sanuki, now Kagawa Prefecture, is the Path of nirvana (涅槃の道場, nehan no dōjō), the final section of the pilgrimage. Kagawa is the smallest prefecture in Japan: twenty-three temples over approximately 143 km, often close to one another, along the Seto Inland Sea.
Yet it begins with the highest: Unpen-ji (66), at 904 m. The temple is actually located within Tokushima territory, just across the border, but belongs to Sanuki; a ropeway goes up there. Zentsū-ji (75) is the birthplace of Kōbō Daishi.
Around Takamatsu, Shiromine-ji (81), Negoro-ji (82), and Yashima-ji (84, on the Yashima plateau) still require a few climbs.
The pilgrimage ends at Ōkubo-ji (88, 447 m), after a final climb of more than 800 m of elevation gain from Nagao-ji (87). Many pilgrims leave their walking staff there, then return to temple 1 to close the loop.
