Tokushima

Province de Awa · « Path of awakening »

Présentation

The pilgrimage begins in the former province of Awa, now Tokushima Prefecture, in Naruto, near the strait’s famous whirlpools. This first section is the Path of awakening (, hasshin no dōjō): where the pilgrim’s resolution is born.

The first ten temples follow closely upon one another across the Yoshino River plain. They are often visited in two or three days: time to find your pace, learn the rituals and prayers, and adjust your pack.

Then comes the first true trial: the climb to Shōsan-ji (temple 12, 708 m), the most feared of the henro korogashi, those passages that “make the pilgrim fall,” with over 1,200 m of elevation gain from Fujii-dera. Further south, Kakurin-ji (20) and Tairyū-ji (21) are two other mountain temples, at nearly 500 m.

After Yakuō-ji (23), in Minami, a stage of more than 75 km follows the Pacific Ocean all the way to Cape Muroto and the first temple in Kōchi.
